Find Your Post Code in Bangladesh
A Bangladeshi post code is four digits that name the post office delivering to an address. Press the button and your position becomes the post code covering that spot, with the district so you can check it looks right.
Your location is only used to find your post code.

The Post Code Format
Format
Four digits, written without a space (1000)
Example
1000
A Bangladeshi post code is four digits with no space and no letters. Dhaka GPO is 1000. The local term is post code, written as two words, rather than postal code or ZIP code.
Four digits is a small range for a country with this population, and that shapes what a code can mean. A code names a post office and the area it delivers to, which in a dense part of Dhaka is a neighbourhood and in rural Bangladesh is a considerably larger area served by one office.
The post code goes after the town or thana in an address, and the district sits alongside it. The thing worth getting right on a form with separate fields is that the post code does not carry the thana or the district โ those are written out, and the code narrows delivery once the item has reached the right part of the country.
What Each Part of a Post Code Means
Read left to right, each part of a Bangladesh post code narrows the destination down.
| Part | Identifies | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Digit 1 | Broad region | Places the code in a broad part of the country. Dhaka and its surroundings occupy the 1000s. |
| Digits 2-4 | Delivery post office | Narrow to the particular post office responsible for delivering to the address. |
| Codes ending 000 | General Post Office | Round codes generally belong to the main office of a major city, which is why Dhaka GPO is 1000. |
| Structure caveat | No published digit breakdown | The Bangladesh Post Office publishes a list of post codes rather than a specification of what each digit position means. Treat confident digit-by-digit tables found elsewhere with caution. |
How post codes work in Bangladesh
The Bangladeshi post code names a post office, and nearly everything that seems odd about it follows from that single fact.
An office serves an area, so the code behaves like a region most of the time. But its boundary is wherever that office stops delivering, which is an operational line rather than an administrative one. A code can cover a few dense streets in Dhaka and a large rural area elsewhere, and both are working exactly as designed.
This is why several localities with quite different names can share one post code, and why a large area can be split across more than one. Neither case indicates an error. It also means a post code is a poor guide to administrative geography: postal boundaries do not reliably follow thanas, upazilas or districts, so anything that needs an administrative unit should take it from the address rather than from the code.
Round codes ending in three zeros are a useful tell, as they are in several neighbouring countries. They generally belong to a General Post Office, the principal office for a major city, which is why Dhaka GPO is 1000 and why the codes people tend to remember are round numbers. Less round codes belong to the smaller offices beneath them.
Adoption is worth being honest about. Post codes are used by the postal service and by anything integrated with it, and far less consistently in everyday addressing, where a written address and a mobile number do most of the work. A missing post code rarely stops a delivery in practice. It removes the one piece of structured data the sorting operation could have used, which costs time rather than causing failure.
Four digits, and the five-digit form field
International forms label the field ZIP code and frequently validate it as exactly five digits. A Bangladeshi post code is four, so it does not fit, and the form will reject it.
The workarounds people reach for all produce a broken record. Adding a leading or trailing zero to make up the length creates a value that belongs to a different place or to nothing at all. Entering 0000 or a number copied from somewhere else creates an address no carrier can deliver against.
A form that cannot accept a four-digit post code cannot handle a Bangladeshi address properly. The honest options are to look for a country selector before the address fields, since many forms switch their validation when the country changes, or to find another route to the purchase. If a seller tells you to put anything in the field, treat that as a warning rather than permission โ the person handling the parcel downstream is working from the record, not from that conversation.
Post code, thana and district
A Bangladeshi address carries several layers of place name โ village or area, thana, district โ and people reasonably expect the post code to encode some of that. It does not, in any way you can rely on.
The code names the delivering office. Which thana or district that office sits in is a separate fact, and the postal boundaries were not drawn to match the administrative ones. A complete address therefore needs all of it written out: the area, the thana, the district, and the post code.
This matters most on forms that collect the pieces separately and then try to infer one from another. A form that fills in a district from a post code will be right often enough to look correct and wrong often enough to cause complaints, and the complaints will come from the people whose addresses are already hardest to get right.
Where a lookup and the Post Office can disagree
This tool answers which post code covers the point your device reported. The Bangladesh Post Office answers which office delivers to a given address. Those usually produce the same code.
The ordinary cause of a mismatch is accuracy. A device fix degrades indoors, in dense built-up areas and when it is working from mobile signals rather than a clear satellite view. Near the edge of a delivery area that is enough to return the neighbouring code.
The other cause is data coverage. Post codes appear less consistently in the open data behind reverse geocoding for Bangladesh than for countries with open government address files, so a lookup may return a place name with no code, or nothing at all. For filling in a form or sanity-checking a code, a lookup is quick and usually right. For a bank form, a legal document or a valuable shipment, confirm it against the Bangladesh Post Office post code list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I find a post code from an address here?
No. This site works only from your current position: your device reports where it is, and that point becomes the post code covering it. There is no address database behind it. To search from a place name, use the Bangladesh Post Office post code list.
Why is my post code four digits and not five?
Because the Bangladeshi system is four digits. A form that insists on five was built for US addresses and cannot handle a Bangladeshi one. Padding the number to fit creates an address that cannot be delivered against.
Why do major city codes end in 000?
Round codes generally belong to a General Post Office, the main office for a city. Dhaka GPO is 1000. Smaller offices within the same city take less round codes.
Does the post code tell me the thana or district?
Not reliably. The code names a delivering office, and postal boundaries do not follow administrative ones. Write the thana and district out in the address rather than expecting the code to carry them.
Do I need a post code for a delivery to arrive?
In practice a complete written address and a working mobile number do most of the work, and post arrives without a code. The code is what lets the sorting operation route the item efficiently.
Why did the lookup return nothing for my location?
Post code coverage in the open data behind reverse geocoding is less complete for Bangladesh than for countries with open government address files. Where there is no code in the data for that point, none can be returned.
