GetMyPostalCode is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by the United States Postal Service, Royal Mail, Canada Post, Australia Post or any other postal authority. Where those organisations are named in our guides, it is to describe how their systems work.

How results are produced, and why they can be wrong

A result depends on two things that are both approximate: the position your device reports, and a third party’s view of which postal area contains that position.

• Device accuracy varies. GPS indoors, in dense cities or on a device falling back to Wi-Fi or network positioning can be out by tens or hundreds of metres.
• Boundaries are not intuitive. Postal areas are operational delivery units, not neat geographic shapes. Near an edge, a point can easily resolve to the area next door.
• Data lags reality. Postal authorities change assignments. A geocoding provider’s data reflects some earlier snapshot.
• Some places have no postal code in the usual sense, and a lookup there will simply return nothing.

When to verify

Check the result with the relevant postal authority before you rely on it for:

• legal, tax or government filings;
• insurance applications or quotes;
• emergency or medical information;
• high-value shipments or anything time critical;
• property or address records.

Data sources

Results come from a third-party reverse geocoding service built on OpenStreetMap data, published under the Open Database License, along with other open datasets. We neither produce that data nor control its accuracy, and the credits are in the footer of every page and on our about page. The provider in use is named in the privacy policy.
