Find Your Poskod in Malaysia
A Malaysian poskod is five digits, and the first two tell you which state or federal territory you are in. Press the button and your position becomes the poskod covering that spot, with the town so you can check it looks right.
Your location is only used to find your poskod.

The Poskod Format
Format
Five digits, written without a space (50480)
Example
50480
A Malaysian postal code โ poskod in Malay โ is five digits written with no space and no letters. 50480 is in Kuala Lumpur.
Leading zeros are real. Perlis and Kedah, in the far north, use codes beginning 01 and 02, so 01000 is valid and 1000 is not. A poskod stored as a number loses that zero and stops matching anything.
The address line puts the poskod before the town, not after it: the code and the town name sit together, with the state on the line below. That ordering is the opposite of several neighbouring countries and is worth getting right on a form that offers separate fields.
What Each Part of a Poskod Means
Read left to right, each part of a Malaysia poskod narrows the destination down.
| Part | Identifies | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Digits 1-2 | State or federal territory | Identifies the state or federal territory, running broadly from 01 in the far north of the peninsula through the rest of the country. |
| Digits 3-4 | Area within the state | Narrows to a town, a city district or a delivery area served by one post office. |
| Digit 5 | Delivery area | Resolves to the particular delivery area or post office within that town. |
| Border areas | Where the state rule breaks | A town near a state line may carry the poskod of a post office across that line, because the code follows which office can practically deliver rather than the administrative boundary. |
How poskods work in Malaysia
Malaysia adopted the current five-digit poskod in the 1980s, and the design is the familiar funnel: a state band at the front, narrowing down to a delivery area at the end. What makes it worth explaining is less the structure than the exceptions.
The first two digits are the part people actually use. They map to a state or federal territory closely enough that a Malaysian reader can usually place a poskod at a glance โ 50 is Kuala Lumpur, 01 is Perlis. That reliability is why forms and delivery services lean on the first two digits for routing and pricing.
It is reliable rather than absolute. Poskod areas follow which post office can practically serve an address, and near a state boundary the nearest office is sometimes across it. A handful of towns therefore carry a code that implies the wrong state, and software that derives a state purely from the first two digits will be right nearly always and silently wrong at the edges.
Within the state band, the remaining digits narrow to a town and then to a delivery area. As everywhere, a single code can cover a few streets in central Kuala Lumpur or a large rural district, because what it really describes is one delivery operation rather than a fixed quantity of ground.
You will also see claims online that the final digit is a check digit. It is not, and treating it as one will cause valid poskod values to be rejected. There is no checksum in a Malaysian postal code; validation can confirm that it is five digits and that the state band exists, and nothing further.
The first two digits, and when they lie
For most purposes the first two digits of a poskod are a dependable shorthand for the state, and Malaysian software uses them that way constantly โ for delivery zones, shipping rates and serviceability checks.
The exception is worth knowing precisely because it is rare. Postal coverage was organised around which office can reach an address, and state lines were not the deciding factor. Where a town sits close to a boundary and is most easily served from the other side, it was given that officeโs code. The address is in one state; the poskod says another.
This is the same phenomenon that produces cross-border postal codes in Australia and the United States, and it has the same implication: a postal code is a statement about mail logistics, and reading it as administrative geography works until it suddenly does not. If your system needs the state, take it from the address.
Writing a Malaysian address
The conventional order puts the poskod immediately before the town on the same line, with the state underneath โ 50480 Kuala Lumpur, then Wilayah Persekutuan. International forms frequently assume the code comes after the town and will produce an odd-looking but still deliverable address.
What matters more is that the poskod reaches the right field at all. Forms built for US addresses label the field "ZIP code" and sometimes validate it as exactly five digits, which a Malaysian poskod happens to satisfy. That is a convenient coincidence rather than compatibility, and it means a wrong poskod will pass validation silently where a UK or Irish code would be rejected outright.
So the five-digit match is worth treating as a trap rather than a relief: the form will accept whatever you type, and nothing will tell you if it was wrong.
Where a lookup and Pos Malaysia can disagree
This tool answers which poskod covers the point your device reported. Pos Malaysia answers which post office delivers to a given address. Those usually produce the same code.
When they do not, the ordinary cause is accuracy. A device fix degrades indoors, among tall buildings and when it is working from mobile signals rather than a clear satellite view, and near the edge of a delivery area that is enough to return the neighbouring code.
The other cause is that delivery areas are operational rather than geographic, including the cross-boundary cases above. For filling in a form or checking a code looks plausible, a lookup is fast and usually right. For anything consequential โ a bank form, a legal document, a valuable parcel โ confirm it with the official Pos Malaysia poskod search.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I find a poskod from an address here?
No. This site works only from your current position: your device reports where it is, and that point becomes the poskod covering it. There is no address database behind it. To search from an address, use the Pos Malaysia poskod search.
What do the first two digits mean?
They identify the state or federal territory, running broadly from 01 in the far north of the peninsula onward. They are a reliable shorthand but not an absolute rule โ a few border towns carry the code of an office across the state line.
Is the last digit a check digit?
No. Several websites claim it is, but Malaysian postal codes carry no checksum. Validating a poskod against an invented check digit rule will reject perfectly valid codes.
Why does my poskod start with a zero?
Perlis and Kedah use codes beginning 01 and 02. If yours appears as four digits somewhere, it has been stored as a number and the leading zero has been dropped. Keep postal codes as text.
Can I use my poskod in a five-digit ZIP code field?
It will fit, because both are five digits. Be careful rather than relieved: a form that only checks the length will accept a wrong poskod without complaint, so there is no validation safety net.
Where does the poskod go in the address?
Immediately before the town on the same line, with the state on the line below. International forms often assume the opposite order; the address is usually still deliverable either way.
